Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Indian Member of the International Court of Justice

Justice Dalveer Bhandari, Indian Member of the International Court of Justice, hails from an illustrious line of lawyers; his father and grandfather both having been the members of the Rajasthan Bar Association. Justice Bhandari acquired a Bachelors Degree in Law from JNV University, Jodhpur, and a Masters Degree in Law from the North Western University, School of Law, Chicago. He practiced law in the Rajasthan High Court till 1976 and in the Supreme Court till 1991. Thereafter, he was elevated as Judge to the Delhi High Court in March 1991, with the additional charge of Chairing the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, the Advisory Board of Delhi State and the Delhi Chapter of the International Law Association. Justice Bhandari has also been the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Delhi State on the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (COFEPOSA) and the National Security Act (NSA)

Justice Bhandari was appointed as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in July 2004 and just over a year later, was appointed as the Supreme Court Judge in October 2005. During his tenure as Chief Justice, he delivered a number of significant judgments in various branches of law, which have paved the way for national improvement

In 2012, Justice Bhandari was nominated by the Government of India, as its official candidate, to the International Court of Justice and was eventually elected after securing 122 votes in the United Nations General Assembly. He was re-elected for a second term on 20 November 2017

Several Universities have conferred Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) on Justice Bhandari. These include National Law University, Delhi; Tumkur University, (Karnataka); KIIT University, Bhubhaneshwar, (Orissa); Jain Vishva Bharati University, Ladnun, (Rajasthan) and Vardhman Mahaveer Open University, Kota, (Rajasthan). He also has the distinction of being Honorary Emeritus Professor of Law by O.P. Jindal University, Sonipat, (Haryana). Most notably, the Indian Society of International Law conferred an honorary life membership on him and also bestowed upon him the title of Emeritus Professor at the Academy of International Law and Diplomacy.

Justice Bhandari is also the proud recipient of the Padma Bhushan (2014); the Dr. Nagendra Singh International Peace Award (2014); and the Northwestern University First Prestigious International Alumni Award (2013), among others.

It is indeed our proud privilege to have Justice Dalveer Bhandari as the Chief Guest at the University’s Eighth Convocation Ceremony proposed to be held on 20th December 2019.
