Workshop cum Training Programme on Intellectual Property Rights

Intellectual Property Management Cell (IPMC) of IIS (Deemed to be University) in collaboration with ASSOCHAMorganizeda Workshop cum Training Programme on Intellectual Property Rights on 20 August 2019 in the University campus. The Guest Speakers for the event were Mr. VijaykumarShivpuje, Director, Patlex Business Solutions, Mr. Govind Sharma, Ex. Chief, NRDC, New Delhi, and Ms. NekitaKumari, Examiner of Patents and Designs, IPO, New Delhi.

Inaugral Session

The inaugural session commenced with lamp lightening followed by SaraswatiVandana.

Dr. Raakhi Gupta, Registrar, IIS (deemed to be University) welcomed all the dignitaries and participants. She emphasized on the need of inclusion of Intellectual Property Rights in the curricula of different courses offeredin India. She also discussed the importance of the role of IP systems in the growth and enhancement of the socio-economic prosperity of a nation, in terms of strategic business planning.

Prof. PradeepBhatnagar, Dean, Faculty of Science, IIS (deemed to be University), gave a brief outline of the workshop.

Mr. VijaykumarShivpujein his keynote address briefly described the work done by ASSOCHAM and informed the gathering about the pan-Nation online programme IPTSE, that helps to bring awareness about IPR to students. He also talked about a Government funded initiative called ATAL labs, and explained its benefits to the society, emphasizing the need for entrepreneurship and innovation.

 

The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks by Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Coordinator, IPMC.

 

IPR Session 1 - Types of Intellectual Property Rights

Mr. VijaykumarShivpuje,explained the various types of Intellectual Property Rights. Using popular examples and engaging the delegates, he both defined and discussed the types of IPR, the significance of Patents and Copyrights, etc.

He began with the example of well-known Bollywood movie‘3 Idiots’ and the I-phone to explain the meaning of Patents and the relationship between Patent and Commodity. He also talked about how IPR creates a monopoly in business and how a trademark is essential for any company. Later, using examples of various famous elements from different parts of India, he explained the significance of Geographical Indications. Altogether, it was a very interactive and interesting session on IPR.

 

IPR Session 2 - Patent Filing Procedures

The second session of the workshop was conducted by Ms. NiketaKumari on Patent Filing Procedures. With an informative presentation, Ms. Kumari spoke about the procedures involved in the filing of patents, the laws governing Patents and also informed the gathering about the locations of the offices.

 

This was followed by an elaborate description and discussion of the process of filing for a Patent, it's do's and don’ts and the importance of Patent Specification, which includes the details of the invention and its purpose. Emphasis was also laid on the significance of the description of the Patent Monopoly and the Claims involved with the idea.

 

IPR Session 3 - Significance of IPR at the Educational Institution Level

The third session on Liscensing / Commercialisation of Technologies/Patents was led by Mr.Govind Sharma, Retd. Chief, National Research Development Corporation. He began by posing the question,'What can you do with your house?'Different answers were proposed by the delegates, such as,'to livein it','to sellit', or 'to put it up for rent', leading toMr. Sharma's reason for asking the question, which was to clarify thatthe term 'license'should be used instead of the word'rent' and like such tangible property intellectual property can also be utilized and commercialized and that’s why called property too.He further stated that anyone could get an idea but difference lies inhow it is utilized. He emphasized that focus is essential on wealth creation, knowledge generation and social well being.

The entire session was a structured process of brain storming and information exchange. 

IPR Session 4- Role of IPMC

Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Asst. Professor and IP Management Cell Coordinator, deliberated on IPR and incubation activities at the University level. He shared the details of University IP Management Cell, their services, event and activities, differentcourses in IPRoffered in the university. He also informed the gathering about the IPR consultancy offered by the cell. He also informed the students about the job opportunities in the field of IPR including positions at graduate level like patent & design agent, trademark agent, IP analyst, IP facilitator, IP Attorney etc.

The last session was taken by Dr. Ritu Jain, Coordinator Institutional Innovation Council (IIC) of the University. She deliberated on the aim and objective of the IIC. She also asked the students to actively participate in the activities organized by IIC.
